The King!!
1 Kings 3:16-28
"Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other." (After the true mother renounced her claim to save the child's life, Solomon ruled:) "Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof." (1 Kings 3:25-27, KJV)
In ancient Israel c. 970 BC, two prostitutes living in the same house each gave birth around the same time. One infant died in the night, and the two women came before King Solomon, each claiming the surviving child as her own. With no witnesses and no physical evidence to resolve the dispute, Solomon called for a sword and ordered the living child to be cut in two, with half given to each woman. The false mother accepted the ruling, but the true mother immediately renounced her claim and begged the king to spare the child's life and give it to the other woman. Solomon thereupon identified the merciful woman as the true mother and awarded her the child. The judgment is recorded in 1 Kings 3:16-28 as evidence of the divine wisdom granted to Solomon. It remains a foundational case study in Western jurisprudence on the use of psychological pressure to elicit truth. While modern evidentiary standards would likely reject such coercive techniques as incompatible with due process, the case is celebrated as a masterful example of judicial insight into human nature and motive.
